James's Story
Hi, my name is James Lloyd and I was selected to compete for Wales in the 2019 Home internationals lacrosse tournament against England and Scotland.
Despite injury setbacks, I managed to make it to the tournament and had a lot of fun. CSSC Elite Competitor’s Fund helped with travel costs, extra equipment to manage injuries which was invaluable as I had to pay for accommodation and transport.
About Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport where you need to score more points than your opponent using a stick with a net and a solid rubber ball. There are many men’s and women’s teams in the UK and across the world. The way it’s played is very similar to hockey, football and suitable for all ages and backgrounds, despite the age and class stereotypes.
Competition format
10 players on each team for men’s, 12 for women’s , with two goals in an area which is a similar size to a football pitch. One point is awarded for each goal scored and there are four quarters in the game format. In the home internationals, each team plays each other once and whoever has the most wins and/or goal difference wins the tournament.
How I got on
We defeated Scotland 11-2 then won the tournament against England 6-5 in overtime. This was the first of the men’s competition in the Home Internationals and Wales won the first!
This helped the profile of the Wales Lacrosse Association and the Individuals involved. I am now in the Wales Dragons Academy coaching youth lacrosse to girls and boys to help develop future talent.
