Eastern Region Golf Qualifier
On 9 July 2020, following the long-awaited re-opening of golf courses, 26 golfers took on varied and uncompromising weather conditions at Lakeside Lodge Golf Club in Pidley. The course was in good shape, although bunker rakes remained out and the flag sticks remained in throughout!
A bacon roll set up the day nicely and then a meal of ham, egg and chips meant those with long journeys were well fed and watered after a day’s golf.
In the men’s competition, David Penney won the gross with a 79. Even more amazing with a 7 on the card at the first par 5 hole! He surely redeemed himself with a round which eventually included 10 pars and 1 birdie.
However, the outstanding round of the day went to Robert N, who won the net competition with a 68 (par 72). There was a tie for the 2nd net place with Steve B, Roger H and Mark J all scoring 72. On a 9-hole count back, Steve B on 42, Roger on 45 and Mark on 46 meant that Steve squeezed out the other two for runner-up.
In the women’s competition, entry numbers were disappointing with several pulling out in the lead up to the day. Three ladies battled it out and Karen S played some excellent golf shots, coming up trumps with a net 71 (par 73), beating Moira M (73), and winning her place in the final at Formby Golf Club.
