Midlands | Welcome to our new Regional Officers
Welcome to the new Midlands Regional Chair, Mike Smith, and Treasurer, Tim Hewitt. Both have recently taken up their new roles and here's a brief introduction from them both.
"After over 44 years in the MOD, I am really looking forward to taking on the role of the CSSC Midlands Region Chair. As far as volunteering is concerned in 2016 I volunteered to take on the position of Senior Responsible Owner for Civil Service Local in the Midlands. I chaired the Midlands Steering Group and sat on the National Steering Group run by the Cabinet Office until I had to step down when I was posted to Cyprus, from where I have just returned.
I see some natural synergies and opportunities with this new role given the focus on volunteering and supporting and developing work colleagues outside of their normal working environment, with a focus on health and well-being.
I have been involved in sporting activities my whole life and remain very active. Sport, exercise and social interaction have helped me manage my personal resilience whilst undertaking some very demanding senior leadership positions. I have a wealth of experience from my long career, which I hope will be of benefit to CSSC. I have always had a passion for the personal development of civil servants, and their health and well-being plays a huge part in their effectiveness in the workplace. This has been even more important during the COVID pandemic.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during my time in the role and hopefully having some fun along the way!"
Mike Smith, Midlands Regional Chair
"I have been a volunteer with Derby & Notts Area Association for approximately the last 3 years as the Assistant Treasurer and committee member.
I work for Nottingham City Council in the Financial Systems Team as an Analyst for income management systems within the Authority. I have worked in a variety of finance roles around the country, but have settled with my wife in Nottingham. I am originally from the town Slough; famous for the Mars factory, the John Betjeman poem, the Trading Estate and The Office comedy.
I am an avid Wycombe Wanderers fan, so enjoy my football and appreciate watching many other sports too; rugby, ice hockey, basketball to name a few. When I was younger I enjoyed playing flat green bowls with my Dad and would love to take it up again in the future. I am a National Trust member and have a particular interest in architecture and like most things related to Star Wars or Marvel Super Heroes.
I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the role and try to encourage members to join and enjoy the benefits that suit their interests, in addition, to continue to help with the Area Association."
